Understanding is a coherence

Certain things make sense when you sense them. A sentence makes sense, uttered correctly. A sentence, uttered correctly, makes sense. An image, proportioned correctly, makes sense. To know what coheres, find what doesn’t. What color or syntax. Find the counterexamples. Half of what it is is what it is not. Definition is a confirmation and a negation. How do words provide meaning image cannot? Understanding is sometimes beyond utterance, only changing when challenged––an experience. What Dali did for time, Warhol for color, Basquiat for Basquiat. Understanding is an experience, memory its scaffolding.
